Abstract: Classical fluids in a non-equilibrium steady state characterized by a constant temperature gradient are known to exhibit extraordinarily long-ranged correlations. For instance, temperature fluctuations are correlated over the entire width of the system, indicating a generalized rigidity that is not related to any broken symmetry. In this talk I will explain the origin of this effect and discuss how it gets modified in a quantum fluid, e.g., conduction electrons in a metal. I will also discuss a relation between correlation functions and response functions that allows for observing the correlations via studying the response to an external perturbation even though the usual fluctuation-dissipation theorem is not valid.
