Undergraduate Projects

Pine Mountain Observatory

UO undergraduates give tours of the grounds, operate small (and large) telescopes for the public to use, and do Q&A sessions with the public on Public Nights at the Pine Mountain Observatory. Post-COVID, these events will take place Friday and Saturday nights during the summer months.

Advanced students can get involved with PMO’s “Asteroid Light Curve” project, learning to operate the research-grade telescopes at PMO and diving into the realm of data analysis.

Students from any major can get involved with projects of their own design. For example, we have a UO History major that is helping us archive articles and press from the early years of PMO. We have also had students help us produce promotional material for the facility.

High Energy Physics

IFS’s undergraduate high energy physics lab is located in Willamette Hall, a building designed specifically for physics. Significant grant funding has equipped our labs with up-to-date computing equipment and high-speed connections that allow our physics undergrads to work on the international ATLAS Experiment. Some undergrads have the opportunity to spend a summer conducting research at CERN in Switzerland.

For more information about high energy physics, check out The Particle Adventure.

UO Science and Comics Initiative

In a program pioneered by theorist Tien-Tien Yu, undergraduate students in UO’s comics studies program are paired with scientific partners to create a comic about the scientist’s work. The program aims to introduce the scientific work being conducted in IFS to the broader UO community and beyond. More information, including application information and links to completed collaborations, can be found here.

Other undergraduate research opportunities exist within our data science, astronomy, gravitational wave, high energy theory, and other IFS research groups.
